Rocking Horse Beanies – Senses and Textures

The Beanies at Rocking Horse have been very interested in different textures when exploring in our Heuristic Area.

We provided a variety of activities for the children to explore different textures and their senses using their bodies.

Gluing with pasta, rice and feathers to develop our sense of touch.

We have been digging in the soil tray in the garden and went a trip to the beach to explore the texture of the sand and put it in our buckets. This also helped the children explore their sense of touch.

We made peppermint playdough (which smelled and tasted delicious!)

We made sensory smell pots using garlic, orange and ginger, all of which didn’t go down very well! These pots will help us develop our sense of smell.

We made our own shakers using pasta and rice for us to listen to.

We made a Sensory walkway which allowed the children to experience different textures on their feet – a totally different experience for the children which they weren’t too sure about at first, but finally got used to it.

All these activities will help the children develop their senses and a knowledge of what they know and can do though play.  The children can also express themselves and have the chance to explore, experiment and try new things indoors and out.
