The Beanies at Rocking Horse have been interested in the changes in the weather recently, so we got all wrapped up this morning and took a walk down to the Figgate Park to collect some leaves and look at the lovely Autumn colours. It’s all about change in the Beanie Room during the month of October. As part of our Jungle topic, some of the preschool children visited the Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder.
We were very lucky as to get to the zoo we got on a bus to Edinburgh, a train from Edinburgh to West Calder and then the zoo mini-bus picked us up at the train station and took us to the zoo.
We saw a variety of different animals, some were, wolfs, goats, marmosets, lemurs, meerkats, tortoise, turtles, snakes, lizards, lynx, alligators, crocodiles, owls, bats and frogs. We didn’t manage to see the bears because they were in there house sleeping.
We spoke about where all the different animals came from, what type of food they eat and also where they sleep.
After lunch we had a play in the zoo’s ginormous park, that had lots of different swings, slides, houses and cars to play on. We then took a little walk to the education room where we took part in a handling session. We all got to hold 3 different types of animals. We held a Royal Python Snake, a tenrec (small hedgehog like animal from the island of Madagascar) and finally a little mouse. All the children were very brave and touched at least one of the animals.
Our favorite animals were:
Ethan – “The tortoise is my favorite.”
Ren – “Holding the snake was the best.”
Jakub – “The snake was also my favorite”
Lucas R – “I loved all the animals. I don’t have a favorite.”
Lucas G – “I liked holding the little animals.”
Erik – “The little baby alligators are my favorite. They are cute.”
Willow – “I didn’t have a favorite one. I liked them all.”
This afternoon, the preschool children did their part in cleaning the community by taking part in a litter pick. Taking part in the litter pick helped […]

In the Beanie Room, we have been observing the children and providing opportunities to help us establish different play patterns and schemas. What is a Schema?
