Active Kids at the Rocking Horse
The Rocking Horse Nursery is located in Duddingston, Edinburgh. The centre opened in 1990 and joined partnership with Edinburgh City Council in 1992.
The centre is a low-rise building which has the benefit of an enclosed garden, play area and a large spacious kitchen area which is used to provide homemade cooked lunches for the children.
Active Kids at the Rocking Horse is a small and welcoming nursery which is divided into four playrooms to accommodate children between 0-5 years and is registered to accommodate 30 children. Our centre operates a 1:3 staff ratio for children aged 0-2 years, 1:5 for children aged 2-3 years and 1:8 for children aged 3-5 years.
Outings and Garden
We are very fortunate to be close to many local amenities. We regularly visit Figgate Park, The Library and seaside etc. We also enjoy taking part in special events such as The Big Toddle for the Scottish Children’s Meningitis Trust, Welly Waddle for the Scottish Cot Death Trust and many of the opportunities that Edinburgh has to offer. You will be asked to give written permission for outings within the RH contracts. We also incorporate active learning experiences within our nursery garden.
The Baby Room
Here, the emphasis is on love, care and building strong relationships. At this stage, we aim to work closely with parents in order to establish a routine for our youngest children. The room has the benefit of direct access to our Sleep Room. We have direct access to the nursery garden for outdoor play which is covered with soft surface and has suitable outdoor toys which we rotate regularly to stimulate and challenge our children.
The Tweenie Room
Within the Tweenie Room the children learn to become slightly more independent and have the choice of a wide range of activities such as painting, play dough and various types of imaginative play. Again, the emphasis here is on love and building relationships. For all children under two, staff provide a ‘daily booklet’ which is an in depth written summary of your child’s day.
The Toddler Room (2-3 years)
Your child will enjoy interacting with their peer group and taking part in more challenging and organised activities. Many of these are based on making the children aware of the world around them. Planning is responsive and spontaneous, taking into account the needs of the children. Regular outdoor play is also an important feature. We have a wide range of activities daily including playdough, sand/water, gluing, painting etc.
The Pre–school Room (3-5 years)
At 3 the children join the Pre-school Room. We work in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council to provide pre-school education, and children attending The Rocking Horse are entitled to the pre-school grant termly. The Pre-school Room is a large, bright area divided into two play areas. The Pre-school Room also uses the nursery’s outdoor facilities which is an enclosed and well equipped garden area with a playhouse and pirate boat sand area. It is soft surfaced and is used for bikes, trikes and ball games. In the Pre-school Room we follow the National Curriculum “ Curriculum For Excellence” and prepare children for entry into Primary 1. The staff within the room plan to ensure a balanced programme of activities to prepare children for school in line with the Pre-school curriculum. The weekly planning is displayed on the notice board within the room.
